Exploring into the Principles of Chinese-English Business Translation

Abstract:Existing principles of translation are rarely applicable to Chinese-English business translation. All too often, therefore, business translation—indispensable to China ’s economic development has hardly any principles to follow. The article takes the lead in addressing this problem. With examples taken from Chinese-English business translations, the author puts forward the view that the major principles of business translation should be “faithfulness, exactness and consistency ”. In explicating this point, the author stresses that the special features of business English account for the variability of translation principles.

1. 引论
在世界经济阔步迈向21世纪的时代，国际商务活动日益频繁。这些商贸活动的许多领域，如，技术引进、对外贸易、招商引资、对外劳务承包与合同、国际金融、涉外保险、国
际旅游、海外投资、国际运输等，所使用的英语统称为商贸英语（Business English ）。它已成为世界经济活动中必不可少的语言交际工具。可以说商贸英语控制着国际交流，国际交流离不开商贸英语。据统计，全世界16 亿以英语为第一语言、第二语言或外语的人群中几乎90%的人每天都在与商贸英语打交道，可见商贸英语的应用十分广泛。

作为中国与世界其他国家商务交流纽带和桥梁的商贸汉英翻译，近年来需求与要求的矛盾更加突出。中国的国际交流与合作的领域不断扩大，商贸汉英互译的任务日趋繁多, 令各行各业译者应接不暇。没接触过商务英语，也缺乏外贸业务知识的译者，恐怕难以将下句汉语译成正确而又专业化的商务英语：

“本合同规定美元的价值由议付日中国银行公布的美元对德国马克、法国法郎的平均买卖汇率的比率来确定。”这句汉语专业性强，若不熟悉商务英语合同付款的表达法，译者必然无从下笔，仅“本合同规定”、“议付日”和“美元对德国马克”中的“对”字，就可使其颇费周折。上句英语译文的几个表达也许会出乎你的意料，请看： The value of US Dollars under this contract is determined by the ratio of the mean buying and selling rates of US Dollars against Deutsche Marks and French Francs published by the Bank of China on the date of negotiation. 

不了解商务英语合同付款表达的译者也许想不到用under this contract 译“本合同规定”，更想不到“美元对德国马克”中的“对”字该用against而绝不是to。这一翻译事实说明了商务翻译工作不仅依赖译者英语水平，而且还需要有国际商务知识。

然而，译者具备了英语技能和国际商务知识之后，也不一定能有效地从事商贸汉英互译。译者还必须掌握商贸汉英翻译的原则和技巧。何谓商贸汉英翻译的原则呢？本文通过商贸翻译的实践分析，尝试提出商贸汉英翻译的原则及其实质，以便能给当前无章可循的商贸汉英翻译一些指导，也望征得翻译理论界的评判。

2. 商贸汉英翻译的原则
根据商贸英语和商贸汉语的特点，我们在此提出，商贸汉英翻译宜遵守如下原则：忠实(faithfulness)、准确(exactness)、统一(consistency)。商贸翻译“忠实、准确、统一”的原则从根本上说是适应了商贸语言与信息内容的特殊性。这个翻译标准基本上能反映商贸汉英语言的变换标准，能满足商贸汉英翻译标准问题的特殊需要。

2.1 商贸汉英翻译的“忠实”原则与运用商贸翻译中的“忠实”是指正确地将原文语言的信息用译文语言表达出来。这个“忠实”不苛求语法与句子结构的一
致，却要求信息内涵上的相等。文学翻译中的“相似”或“相近”说法都不能套入商贸翻译中的“忠实”。商贸活动中的信息传递靠的是相等，即信息等值，而不单纯是巴尔胡达罗夫提出的“语义等值”①。请看下列译文在“忠实”上的问题：

(1) 原文：中国银行、中国建设银行、中国工商银行、国家外汇管理局、国际信托投资公司以及中国人民保险公司等均在宁波设有分支机构。
译文：The following financial institutions and corporations maintain their affiliated organizations in Ningbo: the Bank of China, the Construction Bank of China, the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the State General Administration of Exchange Control, China’s International Trust & Investment Corporation and the People's Insuran
