In an attempt to provide a system that is more likely to have greater acceptance by patients, a novel important system has been developed that maybe injected as a liquid and subsequently solidify in situ. This injectable implant system is comprises of water insoluble biodegradable polymer dissolved in a water insoluble biodegradable polymer dissolved in a water miscible biocompatible solvent. Upon intra-muscular or subcutaneous injection into an aqueous environment, the biocompatible solvent diffuses out of the polymer while water diffuses into the polymer matrix. Due to the polymers water insolubility, the polymer coagulates or precipitates upon contact with water thus resulting in a solid polymeric implant. This technology has been utilized for the delivery of model proteins or other peptide.
