Yunyang Advanced Teacher’s College has grown out of Yunyang Secondary Normal School founded in 1954. The Secondary Normal School began to offer the lessons for associate college degree in 1975 and thus became a branch college of Central China Normal College (the original organization of present Central China Normal University) in 1977.The December of 1978 saw its independence again and was named Yunyang Teacher’s Junior College. Its development and local needs brings the chance of owning its present name------Yunyang Advanced Teacher’s College.
Close to Wudang Mountain, a Taostic place of interest and adjacent to Shenlongjia boasting of the roof of Central China and Shiyan City famous far and near as the Automobile City, the college is situated in Danjiangkou City, the source of water for the middle-line project to divert water from the south to the north. The whole area of the college is 430 mu, among which the building area takes up 180,000 square meters. It is a good place for study and academic pursuits. With tall trees and green grass, graceful and attractive is the campus, which deserves the national honorable title as one of the four hundred beautified units.
This college has 11 departments such as Chinese, Politics and History, English, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and Electronic Information Engineering, Chemistry, Physical Education, Arts, Modern Educational Information Technology, and Basic Courses. Among these departments, there are 7 specialties for regular undergraduate degree and 30 specialties for associate college degree. More than 7,300 students, coming from 22 provinces and cities, are receiving the full-time schooling here.
Now it owns a teaching and administrative staff of 612, including 427 full-time teachers, among which there are 16 professors, 110 associate professors and there are 120 with doctor’s or master’s degree. Over 70 famous scholars and doctor’s directors are invited as guest professors and 7 foreign experts are invited to be the full-time teachers.
The college is now in a better position of strength for well running it. The computer-controlled library with the establishments of RAID system, audio-visual reading room and long-distance educational lab, boasts a collection of 660,000 books and about 1000 kinds of Chinese and foreign journals. The teaching infrastructure is also well built such as the 34 labs for various purposes, 18 multi-functional classrooms for teaching with electrical aids, 100-odd digital and common piano rooms, 50 bases for teaching practice outside the college, closed-circuit TV system, audio frequency radio system and GB Ethernet. There are nine research institutes and learned societies sponsored by provincial and municipal organizations or established by the college itself. The Center of Wudang Culture, an institute of systematic study of local culture, is holding a dominant and distinguishing position in the provincial level scientific research. Journal of Yunyang Teacher’s College is distributed home and abroad. This journal has been acknowledged as one of the ten excellent journals of the professional and training colleges and also as the excellent liberal arts journal among the colleges and universities in Hubei province.
Great importance is attached to the human-centered educational theory and principles to strengthen the quality education. Great efforts are made to deepen educational reform and the initiative is taken to meet the need of social and economic development for the purpose of improving the talent-training pattern. The normal, scientific and specialized management is also realized by establishing the effective teaching management system. Constant efforts are also made to improve teaching ethics and exam discipline, which leads to the good studying attitudes and the distinctive style of college. Financial aids are provided to the poverty-stricken students to ensure that everyone will have no financial trouble in graduating from here. Until 2004, all kinds of talents graduating from this college are working in all walks of life in the society. Thus it is in the top list of the employment rate among the sister colleges.
30-odd-year efforts have seen great progress in all the aspects of college. In recent years it has been successively granted many honorable titles such as “Civilized Unit” in Shiyan City, “Provincial Level Civilized Unit”, “The Best Civilized Unit” in Shiyan City and “The Best Civilized Unit” in Hubei province.
In the new century, Yunyang Advanced Teacher’s College is trying to implement a policy of scientific development in all-round way by following the principle of keeping forging ahead with the progressing times, working hard and creatively and promoting reform and development. Having its feet firmly planted in Shiyan City to make better service in Hubei Province and to play a diffusive role to all over China, it is exerting its efforts to make itself grow into a local comprehensive college or university characterized by outstanding specialties, distinctive local features and good quality to make better service for the development of local economy and society.
