Yes, There is a Santa Claus is Real….在纽约感受圣诞 sangsang 发表于 2008/12/8 8:37:00 |
Christmas in New York. Throngs of shoppers, tourists and visitors of all sorts come into the city. The cold air mixes with the smell of roasted chestnuts.
There are many rich traditions in New York during this Christmas season. Of course there is the gift shopping. Some also come to Rockefeller Center in mid-town Manhattan for the annual Christmas spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall and of course the largest Christmas tree in New York
This is an 80 foot spruce that is selected from the woods of upstate New York. It is then cut down and delivered to the front of the statue of Apollo in front of GE Building. Just after the Thanksgiving holiday, the tree is alight in a spectacular ceremony. From this day until New Year’s Eve, visitors can enjoy the tree and even enjoy a fling around the skating rink.
During the nights and days of the Christmas shopping season, New Yorkers and visitors alike, can enjoy window-shopping. Before making purchases for their family and friends, shoppers can enjoy the store windows of the famed department stores; Macy’s, Sax 5th Avenue, Lord and Taylor, to name a few. Each window has a vignette describing a Christmas scene.
The Macy’s shop windows are the most famous of all. Lately, the Macy’s windows feature scenes from the famed movie, Miracle on 34th Street. This is the fanciful tale of an elderly man claiming to be the real “Santa Claus.” The scenes in the window depict the Thanksgiving parade, which returns Santa Claus for this year’s shopping season. Many other scenes from the film are featured. The climactic scene, in a New York courtroom, the judge’s desk is piled up with letters declaring that Santa Claus is real. The judge has no choice but to declare this elderly man is indeed Santa Claus.
Inside, Macy’s is packed with the actual shoppers, yearning to exchange their credit cards and year-end bonuses for luxury brands of jewelry and handbags. One unique thing about gift purchases in the United States is that they are a “gift”. And being a gift, if the person receiving the gift doesn’t like it, he can go to the store where it was purchased and exchange it for something else. Welcome now to the post-Christmas rituals; lines for exchanges and refunds and the after-Christmas sales.
After traversing the halls of Macy’s, one can trot uptown, either by horse drawn carriage, taxi or the No. 4 subway line to some of the other shop windows. The scenes in the Lord and Taylor windows are quite different than Macy’s. This shop has vignettes of family Christmas scenes of the world; the canals of Venice, outdoor ice skating rinks, family dinners, wintry forest scenes and children frolicking about.
So many sights, so many people, so much to do in New York during Christmas. If anyone feels they have lost their Christmas spirit, they can come and find it in New York.
