I know that I am spoiling your life, and without me, you could work. And you will, I know. You see, I can’t even write this properly. What I want to say is that I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me…and incredibly good. Everything is gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can’t go on spoiling your life any longer. I don’t think two people could have been happier than we have been.

伍尔芙是个天才的女作家，但是心理一直很抑郁，在1941年自杀了。她一辈子有幸获得丈夫伦纳德最无私的关照和爱，伦纳德在妻子死后将她的文稿整理出版。可以感觉伍尔芙为了丈夫活着，她希望自己看起来和其他的正常人一样，但是她实在无法控制住自己压抑的心情选择了自杀。她感谢丈夫，选择自杀从另一种意义上也是她在报答丈夫的爱。

人为了彼此活着。人生有了支柱和动力，日子会很充实。这并不是说教，现实中有很多失业青年和偷懒学生，每一天的青春在无聊中消耗。因为各种各样理由患上抑郁症的人，无论病情轻重，每天的生活就像在完成任务，完成任务后就是打发剩余光阴。克拉丽莎积极主动的生活态度值得嘉许，但在这里理查的古怪话语使她对目前的生活产生疑问，但克拉丽莎依然坚定地不放弃对理查康复的希望，理查只好劝克拉丽莎今后要勇敢面对没有他的现实：“And it’s for you to decide, is it? What about your own life? Just wait till I die. Then you’ll have to think of yourself. How are you going to like that? ”（译文：我的生命要你来决定，是吗？你自己的生活呢？我死了你就得面对你的人生。到时候你又如何逃避？）绝望的人离开世界毫无牵挂，但是受伤最深的人是关怀他的亲人。这不仅是克拉丽莎要面对的问题，也是每一个人要面对的。
