Undisturbed species like Sandager's wrasse attract sport divers from around the globe to Poor Knights reserve.

Blue maomao round a lush bed of kelp in Poor Knights reserve. Though off-limits to commercial fishing since 1981, the island reserve suffered pressure from recreational fishing until 1998, when full protection was conferred.

Outside the reserve at Five Fingers Peninsula, a fur seal pup in Dusky Sound remains protected, as are all marine mammals in New Zealand's waters.

River water stained by tannins from leaf litter flows from the peaks of Fiordland National Park into Gaer Arm reserve. The dark waters provide shade for a menagerie of creatures normally found in far deeper waters.

Reserve status protects creatures as small as this fanciful sea slug foraging in the Poor Knights Islands.

A short-tailed stingray rides the currents through arches and caverns at Poor Knights. New Zealand, praised as a world leader in marine protection, considers the ecological preservation of such seascapes to be in its national interest.

"It was late one afternoon in Fiordland," says photographer Brian Skerry. "I was shooting images of tiny invertebrates when I suddenly saw this shark about 20 feet (6 meters) away." The seven-gill shark isn't a picky eater; it feeds on squid, rays, octopuses, fishes, and small sharks. "It's considered somewhat dangerous," Skerry says. "But it moved slowly and didn't stick around for long."

Scientists call them Parika scaber, but most folks call them therjackets, a fish that's not endangered or threatened or in any particular peril at all—at least not collectively. The species can be found around New Zealand—like this one in Poor Knights reserve—and along the southwest coast of Australia.

A blue-eyed triplefin, small as a matchstick, guards its territory with an aggressive pose.

Nestled in a rocky crevice at Poor Knights, an octopus can also claim a special spot in New Zealand's mythic history. According to Maori legend, this land was discovered by a Polynesian explorer named Kupe, who, during his adventures, disturbed a giant octopus hiding in a coastal cave. Kupe chased the octopus, then killed it with his adze, which he then used to carve new islands from existing ones. Kupe later returned to his native land of Hawaiiki, where he gave instructions on how to reach Aotearoa (New Zealand), though he never went back there himself.

A pod of Hector's dolphins bobs and weaves around Banks Peninsula Marine Mammal Sanctuary. Found only in New Zealand's waters, these dolphins are named after Sir James Hector (1834-1907), who once served as the director of the Colonial Museum (now called Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa) in Wellington. Hector examined one of the nation's first dolphin specimens. Today, this mammal ranks as one of the world's smallest dolphins—just three or four feet (one meter) long—as well as one of the most endangered.

Restoring balance between predator and prey, once overfished snapper eat sea urchins that had nearly denuded the reefs at Goat Island reserve.

Waiting for a meal, a moray eel hides in a sponge.

Soft corals called sea pens, usually found at depth, and a blue cod appear in shallow waters in Long Sound reserve, where tannin-stained water blocks light. When disturbed, sea pens emit a greenish light and can deflate, retreating into their bulbous feet.

A forest of black coral, which can live 300 years, grows in Wet Jacket Arm reserve. New Zealand's reserves offer a benchmark of such wonders, a way to gauge change in the oceans, says Bill Ballantine, a biologist who champions reserves. "We could learn what was natural, instead of just imagining it."

A school of koheru flash through the waters of Poor Knights reserve, a no-go zone for fishermen and other human predators. Despite the legal protection, it's still a jungle down there: Koheru chomp on shrimp and other tiny crustaceans, while dolphins feast on koheru.
